Cartoon: Britain Goes It Alone

This cartoon by Chappatte in "NZZ am Sonntag" (Zurich) is a comment on UK Prime Minister's long-awaited speech last week on Britain's future in Europe. Cameron promised to negotiate a new settlement with Brussels and then stage a straight in-out referendum on British membership if he stays in power after the next election, due in 2015.
The cartoon shows Cameron standing on a map of the UK. He's holding a referendum ballot box. Behind him are a Union Jack flag and a bulldog (the symbol of British tenacity and stubbornness). An EU official, flanked by French President François Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, comments, "Europe of the selfish is born!" A man representing Switzerland (another go-it-alone nation) says that he wants to join.
VOCABULARY
1. If you go it alone, you do something without help from other people. • The United Kingdom may quit the European Union if a referendum after new elections goes through and the public decides it’s better to go it alone.
2. If you say that someone is selfish, you mean that he or she only cares about himself or herself, and not about other people. •  Britain's European partners told David Cameron on Wednesday his demand for radical reform of the EU and an "in-out" referendum on UK membership showed a selfish and ignorant attitude.πηγη-http://www.englishblog.com
